Salem County Has Declined in Residential Property Ownership by 1.4%, As the 2010 Census Reports

Recently reported by the 2010 Census, Salem County, New Jersey decreased in total real estate dwellings by 1,259, or 5%, since the 2000 Census. At the same time, the State of New Jersey increased in housing units by 243,287, or 7%.

Put side by side with the United States, Salem County has a low level of vacancy in residential housing. 2,127, or 7.8%, of properties are currently vacant in Salem County, New Jersey. Within the 2,127 unoccupied properties, 16.6% are the market to be sold, while 33.0% are properties that are available for rent.

                                     

Owner-occupied units from 2000 to 2010 in Salem County have decreased by 1.4%. As reported in the 2010 Census, there were 18,091 (71.5%) owner-occupied housing units, while there were 7,199 (28.5%) units were rented. Salem County has a smaller amount of rentals than the State of New Jersey, which reportedly saw 34.6% of units rented.

Compared to counties across the US, Salem County has a medium level of residential housing units that are owned by minorities. 11.5% are owned and occupied by minorities in Salem County; at the same time the US as a whole had 21.7% and in the State of New Jersey 23.0% of housing units are minority-owned.

Black is the group with the highest percent of rental in Salem County. 59.0% the Black Census group reported to occupy a rented housing unit.
