Starr County Has Sunk in Property Ownership by 1.5%, As Reported in the 2010 Census

The 2010 Census reports Starr County, Texas decreased in total real estate dwellings by 1,937, or 11%, since 2000. During the same period, the State of Texas increased in total housing units by 1,819,861, or 18%.

Compared against the United States, Starr County has a very low amount of unoccupied residential real estate. 2,525, or 12.9%, of properties are currently vacant in Starr County, Texas. Among these 2,525 vacant housing units, 5.0% are on the real estate market to be sold, while 13.6% are trying to be rented.

                                     

From 2000 to 2010, owner-occupied residential properties in Starr County have decreased by 1.5%. As reported in the 2010 Census, there were 13,258 (78.0%) residential properties occupied by owner, while 3,743 (22.0%) housing units were leased. Starr County has a smaller portion of units rented than the State of Texas, which reportedly had 36.3% of the housing units occupied by renters.

When compared to all counties across the US, Starr County has a very high level of residential properties that are minority-owned. 96.2% are minority-owned in Starr County; at the same time the US as a whole had 21.7% and in the State of Texas 39.6% of residential housing units are owned by minorities.
